The Perks of Being a Wallflower & Vinho Verde

I started high school shortly after "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" was first published... that was 25 years ago... I'm getting old...

The Story

"The Perks of Being a Wallflower," directed by Stephen Chbosky and based on his own epistolary, semi-autobiographical novel, is a coming-of-age story about a shy, introverted teenager, Charlie (Logan Lerman). The kid navigates the complexities of adolescence, first love, and friendship. He hovers around Emma Watson and Ezra Miller until they just have to let him be friends with them. They needed an audience for their pop culture references anyway, may as well.

The film portrays the highs and lows of growing up, exploring sexuality, drugs, rape, mental health, and identity.

The Wine

Quinta de São Sebastião's Janela Branca Vinho Verde is a white wine from Portugal's Vinho Verde region, known for its light, crisp, and slightly effervescent character. People rightly associate Vinho Verde with youth. With bright citrus flavors, green apple notes, and a touch of minerality, this wine is refreshing.

Why They Match

  1. Youth: "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" captures the fresh, raw emotions of teenage life. Similarly, the lightness and slight carbonation mirror the story's celebration of youth and the fleeting moments of joy and discovery.

  2. Bittersweetness: Both the story and the wine have a bittersweet quality. "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" balances moments of happiness with the underlying struggles of its characters. Likewise, Janela Branca Vinho Verde has a subtle sweetness, creating an experience that’s both uplifting and reflective.

  3. Celebration of Friendship and Connection: "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" is a celebration of friendship, connection, and finding your place in the world. Janela Branca Vinho Verde, with its light and social character, is the perfect wine to share with friends, reflecting the warmth and camaraderie that is central to the film.
