Oh, Sixteen Candles. This request comes from my sister, Michelle. For the record, I've never once forgotten her birthday.
My pick is a Rosé from Provence, France. I like Château d'Esclans' Whispering Angel Rosé, made from Grenache, Cinsault, and Rolle (Vermentino).
Sixteen Candles, directed by teen-movie wizard John Hughes, follows Samantha Baker (Molly Ringwald) as she navigates the trials and tribulations of high school on her 16th birthday, which her family completely forgets about. Throughout one total let-down of a birthday, Sam deals with her unrequited crush on dreamboat Jake Ryan (Michael Shoeffling) while fending off the advances of a geeky admirer, played by Anthony Michael Hall. The film encapsulates the humor, awkwardness, and heartbreak that come with being a teenager.
If you haven't seen Sixteen Candles in a while, heads up: Unlike a fine wine and my sister, this film has not aged great. There are a lot of homophobic epithets, Anthony Michael Hall's character is rape culture personified, and Long Duk Dong is practically a hate crime.
But nostalgia…
Château d'Esclans' Whispering Angel Rosé is a refined rosé, crafted in the picturesque Provence wine region. It celebrates Sixteen Candles' youthful exuberance with its crisp and invigorating flavors of strawberries, raspberries, and citrus.
There are also hints of minerality and cloves that capture some of the movie's bittersweet depths, like Sam's disappointment at being forgotten and unseen.
