Most fellow lawyers that I talk to love "Legally Blonde." Few would consider it an accurate depiction of law school or trial proceedings, but the way the legal profession looks down on Elle for entirely superficial reasons... yup, we've all been there at least once in our early careers. I've been practicing for 10 years now and it still happens to me sometimes. I can only imagine how much worse it would be if I was a woman too.
Unapologetically feminine, "Legally Blonde" calls for a Pinot Noir Rose, like Diora's La Belle Fete from Monterey, California.
The Movie
Did you know "Legally Blonde" was based on a book? I sure didn't. Given its message that people can have unexpected depths, the irony here is unmistakable. In fact, "Legally Blonde's" origins stem from author Amanda Brown's experience as a blonde Stanford Law student, who enjoyed fashion, beauty, and Elle magazine. She had some trouble getting her peers to take her seriously.
Directed by Robert Luketic, the movie stars a seemingly ditzy sorority girl, Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon). Her boyfriend, Warner Huntington III (Matthew Davis), unceremoniously dumps her for being too frivolous. Determined to win him back, Elle heads to Harvard Law School, which Warren attends. Against all odds, she gets accepted into Harvard Law herself. Throughout her education, she learns to navigate the complexities of law school and prove herself to be a capable, intelligent woman. "Legally Blonde" is a lighthearted, empowering film that challenges stereotypes and showcases the importance of self-belief, resilience, and the power of kindness.
It's a little formulaic and it doesn't look anything like real law school, but Jennifer Coolidge does a bend and snap, so who cares? Reese Witherspoon's performance as Elle Woods is the heart and soul of "Legally Blonde." She perfectly captures the bubbly, optimistic spirit of her character while also conveying the intelligence and determination that lie beneath the surface.
The Wine
The Diora La Belle Fête Rosé of Pinot Noir is an elegant and expressive rosé from the cool climate of Monterey, California. Crafted from Pinot Noir grapes, this wine showcases the finesse and charm that rosé lovers appreciate.
On the palate, the Diora La Belle Fête Rosé of Pinot Noir offers a perfect balance between its bright acidity and delicate fruit flavors. The vibrant red fruit notes are interwoven with hints of citrus zest, wet stone, and a touch of spice, culminating in a crisp, refreshing finish that leaves a lasting impression.
Why They Pair Well
Elle Woods loves anything and everything pink. Both the wine and movie are refreshing and light. However, don't forget that at the end of the day, La Belle Fête is just as much a Pinot Noir as anything you'd get out of Burgundy, France. Underestimate it or Elle Woods at your peril.
